Hip Replacement

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which people with severe hip damage get their damaged cartilage and bone detach from hip joint and replaces the damaged hip with new, man-made parts. This can decrease or remove your pain, help your hip joint bone work well, and improve and better your walking and other movements. Your doctor may recommend you hip replacement only & only if the physical therapy, medicines and exercise are ineffective at the time of severe hip pain.

Types of Hip Replacement?

Options include:

Standard total hip replacement
Some of the muscles around the hip are detached to expose the joint. Then, the damaged bone and cartilage are removed and the artificial joint (prosthesis) is inserted. The new socket attaches to your pelvic bone and the ball to the top of the thighbone (femur).
•    Cemented replacement. Prostheses are held in place on the hip with bone cement.
•    Uncemented replacement. Uncemented prostheses have textured surfaces that allow new bone to grow into the implant.

Minimally invasive techniques
Total Hip Joint Replacement is now usually performed using minimally invasive techniques with smaller incisions, made in between muscles rather than by splitting or detaching them.

These techniques are typically used with regional anesthesia and pain management strategies, that can eliminate the need for large doses of intravenous narcotic medications, while reducing unnecessary side effects and speeding up your recovery.

Minimally invasive techniques comprise:
•    Posterior approach — through a small incision in the back of the hip
•    Anterolateral approach — through an incision on the side of the hip
•    Direct anterior approach — through an incision in the front of the hip

Other surgeries
Two other options are used selectively for appropriate candidates:
•    Conservative hip. Developed by a Mayo Clinic surgeon, the conservative hip is a short stem prosthesis that is 4 inches long. The procedure is called conservative because it conserves more of your thighbone (femur).
•    Hip resurfacing. A Hip Replacement Surgery in which only the worn surface of the hip ball joint is reshaped and capped with a metal prosthesis.

Recovery after hip replacement
Patients have to generally stay in the hospital for a few days.

When is the hip replacement considered?

Circumstances vary, but generally, patients are considered for Ceramic Hip Replacement if they suffer from the below circumstances:
•    If your pain is severe enough to restrict work, recreation, and the daily activities of regular chores.
•    If your pain is not relieved by anti-inflammatory medicine, then you tend to use a cane or walker for restricting activities.
•    If you have significant stiffness in your hip.
•    If your x-rays show advanced arthritis, or other problems.

What can one expect of a hip replacement?

A hip replacement generally gives pain relief for about 90 to 95 percent of patients. It will allow all patients to carry out many normal activities of daily living. The artificial hip may also help you to return to active sports or heavy labor tasks under your physician’s instructions. Almost all patients with stiff hips before surgery will regain near-normal motion, and nearly all have improved motion after replacement.
